The Dutch supermarket chain, Dumbo, has pulled its 2022 World Cup advert from television after consumer complaints. The advertisement featured construction workers wearing the Netherlands team colours dancing through a building site and found backlash among human rights groups. Over 6,500 migrant workers have died on construction sites in Qatar since it won the right to host the world cup.
“Jumbo has immediately decided to stop the World Cup television advertisement that was shown for the first time last night (November 1). We now realise that this advertisement makes a link to the appalling working conditions in Qatar, and that was never our intention. We deeply regret this and offer our sincere apologies,” said the company in a statement.
