FISHY PRACTICE

A supermarket in Kuwait has been shut down after it was caught sticking googly eyes on its fish so that they would appear fresher. A local newspaper was first to notice the questionable practice when an image popped up online. After the image gained traction, Kuwait’s Ministry of Commerce was quick to shut down the unconventional practice.

The images of the googly-eyed fish quickly started trending on Twitter with one user posting “That is gross and bad business practice, but I can’t help laugh at the same time. Did they honestly think people wouldn’t notice?”

While another posted, “The intersection of people, who know enough about fish to look at their eyes to judge freshness and people who would be tricked by googly eyes can’t possibly be very large?”

The fake eyes were placed directly on top of the fish’s original eyes so that they would appeal to consumers, however, in some cases had slid off.
