Going Electric

electric fleet, lean & green

Lidl is the first supermarket in the Netherlands to receive the three-star Lean and Green certification for the CO₂ reduction in its logistics activities.

Ruud Metten, Logistics Purchasing and Innovations Manager at Lidl received the third star.

“We are proud of this third Lean and Green star and see this as recognition for the steps we have taken together with our transporters towards making our company more sustainable,” said Metten/

Lean and Green’s Jan van Nunen said he was pleased to guide Lidl Nederland towards the 3rd Lean and Green Star.

“It’s very cool that they were the first supermarket in the Netherlands to achieve this milestone. This process went smoothly because Lidl Nederland monitors the trip and fuel data very accurately. They prove that with insight, good measures and the right management information, you can go a long way in the field of sustainability,” said van Nunen.

Lidl and its team have been committed to sustainable transport for years. The supermarket has reduced more than 40 percent of CO₂ emissions per tonne in the past seven years. This is partly due to the electrification of the vehicle fleet and the expansion of the number of trucks with bio-LNG.

The new planning system, which allows the trucks to be scheduled even more efficiently, with the highest possible load factor, has also contributed to the 3-star certification. On the way back, Lidl takes all residual flows from the branch for recycling to prevent the number of 'empty kilometres'.

In the coming years, Lidl will make its transport more sustainable by using more electric vehicles and fossil-free fuels such as bio-LNG in consultation with its logistics partners.
