Pause on Amazon Fresh in UK

Customer walks out of an Amazon Fresh store with her trolley

Amazon has paused the roll-out of its checkout-free stores in the UK, as sales from the current 19 stores disappoint. The first 'just walk out' supermarket was opened in west London in March of 2021, and it was believed the company would open a total of 30 stores in the first phase of its expansion.

Last November, Leaked documents further revealed plans for 260 Amazon Fresh stores across the UK by the end of 2024. However, these plans seem to have been abandoned as the rising cost of living halts customer sales.

The supermarkets that pioneered cashless technology had scanners recognise items as they were in the cart. The cost of high-level technology could not keep up with traditional supermarkets and convenience stores. New stores will only open at locations where Amazon has already signed the lease.
