Press reports revealed that upmarket food retail chain David Jones is looking to open stores in Australia, aiming to fill an existing gap in the high-end food market. The move has been announced by David Jones’ owners, South African giant Woolworths Holding (no relation to the Australian supermarket chain).
Ian Moir, chief executive of Woolworths Holding, explained that the new stores will open this year, on a date to be decided. David Jones’ newly appointed chief executive, John Dixon, formerly a senior executive of Marks and Spencer, is expected to lead the new team.
“If we can get that right this can be a big business,” said Moir. “It’s going to take time and capital investment. This could be a big bus that we really need to build and build well over time.”
