Walmart celebrated the grand opening of a new 1.5 million-square-foot fulfilment centre.
Located 16 kilometres from Hagerstown, Pennsylvania, the generation facility will enable the retailer to fulfil more orders in a reduced time.
"This is an exciting day for Greencastle, and we are thrilled to be the new home of Walmart's newest state-of-the-art fulfilment centre," said Patrick Heraty, Vice Chairman of the Antrim Township Board of Supervisors.
"This facility will benefit the residents of our county and the greater south-central Pennsylvania region."
The fulfilment centre is Walmart's fourth next-generation facility, with a fifth set to open in 2026. These generation facilities have combined people, technology, and machine learning to achieve faster shipping and delivery.
With the rest of Walmart's fulfilment network, the next-generation centres will enable retailers to reach 95 percent of the USA population with services.
"Walmart is paving the way for good jobs and great careers in south-central Pennsylvania with the Greencastle fulfilment centre. These tech-powered jobs will drive the future of Walmart's continued promise of speedy shipping and delivery for customers on the East Coast," said Karisa Sprague, Senior Vice President, Fulfilment Network Operations for Walmart USA.
"Our next-generation fulfilment centres are the perfect example of how we are a people-led, tech-powered retailer."
Additional benefits of this innovative technology include new career pathways for associates. The Pennsylvania fulfilment centre will be home to more than 1,000 associates and will offer a variety of positions.
"We're proud to create even more opportunities for associates to build a career at Walmart. Associates at the Greencastle facility will work with cutting-edge technology and play a pivotal role in increasing shipping speeds for our customers," said Rich Hanna, director of operations, Fulfillment Center number 7381, Walmart USA.
"I'm excited that we are at the forefront of what's next for the company as we continue to modernise the business for our customers."
During the grand opening ceremony, Walmart celebrated its commitment to the community by presenting a USD 10,000 donation to the Greencastle-Antrim School District. In fiscal year 2023, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation contributed more than USD 38 million in cash and in-kind donations to nonprofit organisations in Pennsylvania.
