COUNTDOWN RECRUITS 500 STAFF NATIONALLY

Countdown has embarked on a massive recruitment drive to fill some of its 500 seasonal and permanent vacancies, with bulk recruitment days taking places in Christchurch, Auckland, Hamilton and Rotorua.

“With 181 stores nationwide and more on the way, we are often recruiting. Those open days are a great chance for us to see what talent is out there and who will make a great contribution to the Countdown team,” said Deborah Beegling, Countdown’s general manager of human resources.

In addition to face-to-face recruiting, the company recently tried to advertise its vacancies online. Due to technical issues related to an ‘IT system upgrade’, however, it had to resort to the old-fashioned methods and about 20 jobs were advertised in the press.

On the whole, Countdown employs close to 18,000 people throughout New Zealand. Although the usual applicants are people requiring flexible hours, mostly parents and high school or university students, the supermarket chain also offers a number of full-time positions on the shop floor, in the support office or in the call centre.
