Countdown Shows Support For New Labelling

Countdown has announced its support for the new Country of Origin food labelling bill that recently passed in the New Zealand parliament. While Countdown has voluntarily provided country of origin information on single-ingredient, fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and seafood since 2008, as well as all of its own brand packaged goods, Countdown’s general manager of corporate affairs and sustainability, Kiri Hannifin said that the new law will provide greater transparency for consumers.

“Kiwis have long shown an interest in supporting locally grown food, and that increasingly people want greater transparency around where food comes from. “We took steps several years ago to support customers to be able to make informed decisions about their food purchases. We’re so fortunate here in New Zealand to have incredible locally grown food, and it’s more and more important to our customers that they better understand where food comes from and how it’s farmed.”

“We’re pleased to see country of origin labelling take another step towards being much more widely available for customers, across all retailers and brands.”
