A new $141 million cheese plant will be built by Fonterra to replace the old Stanhope factory, which was destroyed by fire one year ago. According to Judith Swales, recently appointed managing director at Fonterra Oceania, the state-of-the-art facility will be part of the company’s multi-hub strategy, supplying Australian consumer, foodservice and export markets.
“The plant will be able to produce 45,000 MT of cheeses each year, including parmesan, gouda and mozzarella, an increase of 15,000 MT on the previous year,” Swales said. “It will leverage our footprint in 100 markets and also the recent free trade agreements with China, Japan and Korea.”
Construction will start next year and is set to be completed in 2017.
