New World Point Chevalier has geared up to open in two weeks' time with shelves now in place, fresh department equipment installed, and the final fit-out of fixtures well underway.
The focus has shifted from construction to becoming retail-ready, with teams busy stocking shelves and completing training across all departments as the store prepares to welcome customers on Tuesday, the 19th of August 2025.
Located at 1136 Great North Road in Auckland, the store will be opening earlier than originally planned to help provide an option for customers impacted by the fire at New World Victoria Park.
Built on the site of a former RSA and car dealership, the new supermarket represents a NZD 73 million investment by Foodstuffs North Island in Point Chevalier.
The 2,752m² store will create around 120 jobs and offer 105 car parks, six team checkouts, and eight self-scan checkouts. The broader development also includes 2,000m² of mixed-use office space above the store and 147m² of additional retail along Great North Road, which, in the short term, will be used by customers wanting to collect their online orders.
"It’s great to be bringing a new store to Point Chev, and opening earlier than expected means we can support local customers sooner," said Lindsay Rowles, GM of Retail and Property at Foodstuffs North Island.
"The store’s nearly there. The last bits of equipment are going in, the fridges are about to be switched on, and our teams are working hard to get everything ready.”
New World Point Chev will be locally owned and operated by Matthew and Nicole Mullins, who previously owned New World Ōtaki and are relocating to Auckland with their three young children.
“We’re nearly there, and we’re counting down the days. There’s a real buzz as we get closer. The team’s flat out getting stock on shelves and everything ready behind the scenes. It’s all about being ready to give locals a great first impression," said Matthew Mullins.
"We’ve had an awesome time in Ōtaki. It’s been more than just work; it’s felt like home. Now we’re keen to bring that same energy to Point Chev. We’re not just opening a store, we’re here to get stuck in and be part of the neighbourhood."
Mullins has been in the grocery game since his school days, and has run stores in Christchurch and Wellington, including New World Railway Metro and New World Newlands.
