The countdown is on for New World Point Chevalier, with construction progressing faster than expected.
Located at 1132 Great North Road, the site formerly home to a local RSA and car dealership was purchased by Foodstuffs North Island in January 2023. Earthworks began in December that year, and in just over 18 months, the transformation into a brand-new supermarket is almost complete.
The new store is expected to create 120 jobs and represents a NZD 73 million investment in the Point Chevalier community.
Spanning a 7,142m² site, the new store will offer 2,752m² of retail space, 105 car parks, six team member checkouts, and eight self-scan checkouts. The development also includes 2,000m² of mixed-use office space above the store and 147m² additional retail space along Great North Road.
“We know how much locals value having quality shops, services and jobs close to home,” said Lindsay Rowles, GM of Retail and Property at Foodstuffs North Island.
“We’re proud to be investing in Point Chev and excited to bring forward the opening - the new store will be ready to go in time for spring.”
New World Point Chevalier will be owned and operated by Matthew and Nicole Mullins, who bring extensive grocery experience and a hands-on approach to being part of their local community. The Mullins family owns New World Ōtaki and will be moving north with their three young children.
Matthew Mullins began his career in grocery while still at school, working in the chilled and frozen distribution centre at Foodstuffs South Island. Since then, he has held various roles across stores in Christchurch and Wellington, including Store Manager at New World Railway Metro and New World Newlands.
“We’re really excited to be joining the Point Chev community,” said Matthew Mullins.
“We’ve loved being part of things in Ōtaki, and we’re looking forward to bringing that same energy and local focus up to Auckland. For us, it’s not just about opening a store, it’s about settling in, getting to know people, and being part of something special here.”
The New World Point Chevalier store is now set to open its doors to the community on Tuesday, the 9th of September 2025.
