France | Ban on Plant-Based Meaty Names En Pause

A ban on plant-based food manufacturers using meaty names for their alternative products has been suspended by the French Conseil d’Etat. Announced early July, the ban was intended to come into effect October 1, however a court ruling has said it was not possible for businesses to comply by this date.

The court expressed doubt over the legality of the ban and whether it is justified in terms of providing consumer information and implemented an interim order suspension.

Though temporary and not a reversal, the suspension has been welcomed by organisations advocating plant-based foods.

France became the first country in the European Union to impose such a ban. The French decision followed a ban on meaty terms for food containing no meat announced by the South African government.
