KiwiHarvest a national food rescue organisation in New Zealand with branches in Auckland, North Shore, Dunedin and Hawke’s Bay, has partnered with mobile app Y Waste to further reduce food waste in New Zealand.
KiwiHarvest rescue over 60,000kgs of surplus food a month and redistribute this to over 220 charities and social service agencies to help feed people experiencing food insecurity.
KiwiHarvest is often approached by food outlets who wish to donate prepared food to them which, unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, they have to say no to. This could be due to the nature of the food being offered, food that has a short life span, the amount available, or the time of day.
Enter Y Waste, the mobile app that allows food outlets to post up items of unsold food that need to be picked up at a specified time, which customers purchase through the app and in return all proceeds are donated to KiwiHarvest for them to continue rescuing good food and nourishing communities.
Deborah Manning, CEO and Founder of KiwiHarvest is really excited about this new partnership to reduce food waste. "Y Waste is suitable for all kinds of outlets to use. All types of food such as sandwiches, cupcakes, doughnuts, pastry, bread, salads and hot or cold restaurant meals will be able to be posted for sale on the app," said Manning.

People looking to purchase food through the app can download it from their app store.
The KiwiHarvest Y Waste app is now available across New Zealand.
