Local food prices are hitting an all-time high; research has revealed that 35 percent of customers' weekly supermarket shop has increased by between $50 and $100. Kiwis are shifting towards grocery items that are more cost-effective, with 42 percent of the country buying less meat and seasonal produce.

"Meal planning is a savvy way to stick to your food budget - allowing you to enjoy quality ingredients without breaking the bank. One of the biggest ways households spend more than they need to is through food waste, with leftover ingredients ending up in the bin. Recipes from HelloFresh contain pre-portioned ingredients to ensure that you're cooking and eating everything you purchase, ultimately reducing your food waste," said Hannah Gilbert from HelloFresh.

Kiwis are also more mindful of the environment in their grocery purchases. It was reported that 77 percent of consumers consider how to reduce food waste when shopping in store. Over 60 percent of the nation also indicated that shopping locally is a top priority, helping reduce travel-related emissions. HellosFresh meals create 25 percent fewer CO2 emissions than the same meals made from supermarket ingredients due to a lean kiwi supply chain.

Finally, Kiwi shoppers know how grocery products impact their bodies. Over the past few years, 62 percent of respondents changed their diet to have a greater benefit on well-being, and 44 percent considered adopting a plant-based diet.

"Following a flexitarian or plant-based diet is also a great way to place less stress on the planet. A diet incorporating more plant foods can improve the health of our environment and reduce greenhouse-gas emissions," said Gilbert.
