Saint Clair Family Estate’s Marlborough Premium Grüner Veltliner 2015 has taken out the Trans-Tasman Award for Best New Zealand Wine at the Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show.

Since its launch, the event has been recognising wines that fall outside the mainstream, and that’s exactly what family-owned winery Saint Clair wanted to achieve when it decided to plant its first vineyards of Grüner Veltliner in Marlborough in 2008, with the first grapes harvested in 2011.

To celebrate the trophy, Saint Clair’s owners Neal and Judy Ibbotson toasted with Saint Clair Dawn, their first-ever méthode traditionelle wine that was created for the 100th birthday of Neal’s mother, Dawn Ibbotson, in 2014. She turned 102 in December.
