TIME TO HEAT UP YOUR OVENS

Did you know that the average Kiwi eats 12 meat pies a year? Could you imagine that NZ households annually spend $110 million on pies?

Let those ovens heat up, then. Entries are open until June 23 for the 20th Bakels New Zealand Supreme Pie Awards, hugely valuable to all New Zealand bakers. On July 21, between 7am and 6pm, pies will be judged against their texture, flavour, colour and gravy proportion to meat. According to NZ Bakels managing director Brent Kersel, who has judged the awards for ten years, passion and love of good food are the most important ingredients.

“It takes dedication and a lot of hard work to make a pie worthy of winning this award. It shows real skill,” Kersel said.
More than 5,000 pies from 550 bakers will vye for the coveted Supreme Pie Award, which includes a $7,500 cheque. Last year, the trophy went to New World Greenmeadows for its potato top pie.
Winners will be announced on July 26.
