WANAKA’S SUPERMARKET BOOM

new world wanaka proposed build

Wanaka’s grocery industry is about to grow, with the Queenstown Lakes District Council recommending the addition of new builds.

A developing Northlake housing area has been recommended to include a supermarket of up to 1250 square metres – 250 square metres less than requested, but it will more than double the size of the development’s commercial area and enable the establishment of a retirement home.

The recommendation came from senior planner of policy Sarah Picard and general manager of planning and development Tony Avery. Wanaka already has one New World supermarket in the CBD, and Foodstuffs South Island has announced it plans to build another in the Three Parks subdivision next year.
