Re-turn Deposit Scheme

Re-turn Deposit Scheme

IRELAND | Re-turn Deposit Scheme has gained significant momentum since its launch in February.

In just over a month, the Re-turn Deposit Scheme has collected over 5.6 million drink containers, showcasing a remarkable surge in recycling efforts nationwide. How it works is that when consumers buy a drink in a plastic bottle, aluminium or steel can that features the Re-turn logo, they pay a small deposit in addition to the price of the drink. When the empty and undamaged drink container is returned to participating shops and supermarkets, the consumer is refunded the deposit back in full.

In the first ten days of March alone, over 3.6 million drink containers were returned, surpassing the entire collection figure for the month of February, which stood at 2 million. This swift increase in returns highlights the Scheme's growing momentum and the strong support it has garnered from communities across Ireland.

"We are delighted with the number of plastic bottles and cans being returned by consumers nationwide. It indicates that our efforts to encourage recycling and support Ireland's environmental goals are resonating," said Ciaran Foley, CEO of Re-turn.

With over 1.9 million transactions recorded and more than 2300 Reverse Vending Machines now accessible nationwide, the Scheme is well on its way to advancing Ireland's recycling targets and promoting sustainable recycling efforts.

Re-turn has provided comprehensive guidance on how the Scheme operates to support consumers and retailers further. This includes information on how consumers can receive their deposit back, where they can return their bottles and cans, and clarification on the types of containers included in the Scheme.

Retailers are also provided with guidance on participating in the Re-turn Deposit Scheme, including instructions on handling deposits, identifying eligible containers, and managing returns.

Furthermore, Re-turn has addressed common queries and concerns with a FAQ on their website ensuring transparency and accessibility for all stakeholders involved.

The introduction of Ireland's Re-turn Deposit Scheme marks a significant step towards achieving the country's recycling targets and promoting a circular economy. With widespread participation and support, the Scheme is poised to substantially reduce plastic waste and preserve the environment for future generations.
