Woolworths and The Salvation Army are again joining forces to spread joy and support to those in need through their annual Christmas appeal. In a heartwarming gesture, Woolworths has committed to matching customer donations up to an impressive $200,000.
Starting today, shoppers can contribute by simply 'rounding up' their bill at the till, making it easy to give a little extra to aid The Salvation Army in their efforts. Jono Bell, Territorial Director of Community Ministries at The Salvation Army, said that small or large donations make all the difference. He highlighted the positive impact each donation can collectively have across Aotearoa.
Acknowledging the challenges many face this year, Bell said the appeal provided an accessible opportunity for people to contribute effortlessly while going about their regular shopping. Every donation received will play a role in bringing joy to those who may be facing difficulties this Christmas.
The Woolworths and The Salvation Army Christmas Appeal will continue until Sunday, December 24, 2023, ensuring people can support others throughout the holiday season. Shoppers can participate by donating non-perishable groceries in-store, rounding up their purchases at the checkout, or contributing food online through the Foodbank Project.
Key items sought for the Appeal this year include cereal, pasta, school lunch items, coffee/tea, and more. Spencer Sonn, Managing Director of Woolworths New Zealand, expresses enthusiasm for this initiative, noting that last year, together with customers, they were able to donate $400,000 to The Salvation Army. He encourages everyone to join in and contribute what they can, in-store or through the convenient Foodbank Project.
Woolworths actively supports The Foodbank Project by offering groceries at a significant discount and delivering donations to food banks across New Zealand without charge. Additionally, Woolworths' Food Rescue program annually donates nearly 200,000kg of food to food bank partners, including The Salvation Army. Through this collaborative effort, Woolworths and The Salvation Army aim to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those facing challenges this holiday season.
