Swiss supermarket chain Migros is extending the use of its M-Check sustainability evaluation scale.
M-Check is currently used to evaluate product animal welfare considerations and climate compatibility.
The supermarket's products are held against a number of different criteria and then given a star rating between one and five. The scale allows for customers to make informed decisions about product sustainability. Migros currently has over 33,000 rated in the M-Check system.
Moving forward, the packaging sustainability of a product will be checked against factors such as weight, material and life cycle. The parameters were developed with Migros and external testing partners Carbotech AG and Empa to ensure a science-based test.
The packaging assessment is expected to be in action for over 300 products by the end of 2022.
