Woolworths NZ Enters A New Era

The final Countdown is now a Woolworths NZ store (Woolworths Botany), ending months of online speculation and tracking.

With customers having a moment of nostalgia and posting online about a walk down memory lane, The Edge radio will be onsite at Woolworths Botany today from 11 am-1 pm, with a live DJ streaming and giving away prizes to lucky customers.

The celebration ends a TikTok trend that invited followers to guess which song Woolworths team members were rocking out to, and re-share with music from Swedish rock band Europe (The Final Countdown) circa 1986.

Woolworths has a long history in New Zealand, dating back to 1929. Over the years, Woolworths and its predecessor companies have operated supermarkets under a number of brands, including Woolworths, Countdown, Foodtown, Big Fresh, and 3 Guys.

Woolworths NZ Director of Retail Jason Stockill said the transformation represented a new era of Woolworths in New Zealand.

“We’re excited about what this means for kiwi customers. We’re still championing local communities, customers and fresh produce - just like we did at the beginning in 1929. That won’t change," he said.

“It’s a new phase that brings many new benefits for Kiwi customers, including our commitment to quality, fresh and locally grown produce (wherever possible), our investment in technology and team safety, sustainability and in giving back to our local communities.”
