Innova Market Insights has released its Top Global Packaging Trends, a forward-looking analysis of the major trends set to impact the global market in the year ahead.
This extensive analysis has uncovered five key opportunities for brands worldwide to consider for future innovation, spanning sustainability, digital enhancements, and packaging for personal occasions and routines.
Trend #1: Substantiated Sustainability
The “Substantiated Sustainability” trend has been all about moving from intent to evidence, as 48 percent of global consumers said that food and beverage guidelines were unclear.
Regulatory pressures and consumer mistrust have raised the bar, forcing brands to shift their agendas. Sustainability has been defined by more than marketing-driven messaging.
Rather, initiatives must be measurable and verifiable for accountability. This is especially significant, as brands that fail to incorporate proof into their packaging will face consumer scepticism and even compliance costs.
Along with greater accountability, real-world recycling applications have become another important consideration. Designing circularity into flexible packaging was one strategy brands could employ, such as using mono-material pouches to improve their recyclability.
Trend #2: Digital-Enhanced Design
Packaging has evolved from a static entity into an intelligent infrastructure that connects steps across the value chain. Brands that enhance digital-enhanced designs will gain ground in traceability, compliance, and consumer engagement.
Digitalisation is no longer an optional consideration; this shift toward data-driven, interconnected packaging systems is reflected in consumer interest.
Nearly half of global consumers have been using connective packaging to learn more about a product. From a brand perspective, QR-enabled packaging can link consumers to tailored training content or interactive app experiences to drive engagement. AI has also accelerated packaging design, optimisation, and lifecycle management.
Trend #3: Health-Forward Convenience
Demand for both wellness and convenience has reshaped formats, with packaging increasingly becoming an enabler of wellness.
Particularly with the rise of GLP-1-driven lifestyles and the desire for functional nutrition, packaging that addresses these concerns is increasingly essential. In fact, 26 percent of consumers said that nutrition labels influenced their healthy eating choices.
Apart from messaging, advances in aseptic cartons, high-protein preservation, and portable formats have also facilitated the mainstream integration of functional nutrition into consumer lifestyles.
Benefits have now become synonymous with front-of-pack identity. Shape and format more closely follow the claim, from resealable pouches to liquid cartons with straws.
From a convenience perspective, portable, portion-controlled, and fresh also remain key packaging trends.
Trend #4: Packaged For You
Consumers expect packaging that reflects their identity, culture and routines. Younger consumers, especially, value characteristics such as size and branding. As such, packaging has become more adaptable to resonate with consumers.
For example, the 5-litre dual-pack format has been designed with easy handling and at-home storage in mind. Inclusive labelling, such as on-pack Braille, can also reflect growing preferences for more accessible formats.
Packaging with intent was another core tenet of the “Packaged for You” trend, which aimed to combine functionality, convenience, and sustainability in more meaningful ways. Built-in compartments can enhance portability and ease of use while also catering to real-world consumption behaviours.
Premium functionality, smarter resealability, and convenience-driven designs are part of demonstrating intentionality.
Trend #5: Sensory Unboxing
The “Sensory Unboxing” trend indicated how packaging has evolved from a passive to an active, multi-sensory experience. Interactive and tactile components have influenced consumers' emotional engagement and memorability.
Younger generations, especially, have placed greater value on aesthetically pleasing packaging, with 46 percent of Gen Z consumers saying aesthetics was important to them.
Bright visuals and activity-led packaging add excitement to everyday consumption moments and cater to these preferences. Structured layouts for ingredient organisation can simplify interactions, create a clean unboxing ritual for consumers, and enhance freshness.
Additionally, activity-led packaging can make mealtimes more interactive for young children or families, engaging the entire family.
In the global market, there are a few key opportunities. Brands that weigh these considerations will not only resonate with global consumers but also drive stronger differentiation and relevance.
