New World Whitianga Uses Boat to Deliver Groceries to Those in Need

Foodstuffs North Island has taken to great lengths to deliver much needed supplies to affected regions in the aftermath of Cyclone Gabriel, firstly by truck, then helicopter, and now by boat.

Waka Kai is a nine-metre vessel owned and operated by New World Whitianga and has been sailing across nine areas in the Coromandel region, delivering essential supplies to communities without access to nearby grocery outlets.

"We’re committed to serving our communities through our local family-owned stores” said Foodstuffs North Island Chief Executive, Chris Quin.

“We understand access to essential goods is critical during times of crisis. Waka Kai is an important contributor to our efforts to support the Coromandel region during this difficult time."

Filled with a variety of products, such as fresh produce, dairy, meat, and main household essentials, Waka Kai has been liaising with local authorities and officials to reach the areas in dire need of support.

Since being introduced in 2019 as an alternative option for home delivery, Waka Kai has become a much needed asset to New World Whitianga. Owner and Operator, Kerry Stanley said he wanted to make use of Waka Kai as soon as possible to assist with Cyclone Relief.

“They don’t have any internet access so we’ve basically going back to pen and paper orders. We’ve also had customers who don’t know they’re getting orders because they’ve got family members who’ve ordered for them. Customers have been very grateful for the service and of course our deliveries have been free of charge.”

The community response from this service has been “Overwhelmingly Positive,” said local resident, Rachel Boyd.

“The family ordered us groceries, it’s the best thing ever this boat, it really is. So, thank you very much.”

The co-op will continue to assess conditions in the Coromandel region, and Waka Kai will remain a way of transporting groceries for as long as it is needed.
