Women in Business | Helen Paul-Smith, ŌKU

Growing up in the Central Plateau of New Zealand, surrounded by the native flora and fauna, sparked a deep passion for nature in Helen Paul-Smith (Tapuika, Ngaīterangi), co-founder and director of ŌKU.

Being immersed in that environment instilled in her a respect for the healing properties of native botanicals and a desire to share them in a meaningful, accessible way.

Paul-Smith then studied a Diploma of Ayurvedic Medicine at Wellpark College of Natural Therapies, worked as a yoga teacher, and has been immersed in natural health and wellbeing for around 30 years.

Over time, she combined those modalities with her love for Māori culture and Rongoā Māori. Bringing together traditional knowledge systems and holistic wellbeing practices naturally led her into creating products that honour both culture and nature.

Paul-Smith has learned how to run a business for good, genuinely and authentically. She said it doesn’t always have to be about chasing money, and that one can lead with integrity, purpose, and service and still succeed.

“My appreciation for our native bush, rivers, lakes, mountains, flora, and fauna continues to motivate me. Protecting and celebrating what makes New Zealand unique drives everything we do,” said Paul-Smith.

“Seeing ŌKU teas on the shelves of David Jones Australia, proudly using Te Reo Māori on the labels, has been incredibly special. Another highlight has been planting thousands of native plants and watching the native birds return, which feels like true impact.”

She added that when one steps outside one's social conditioning and ingrained belief patterns, creativity and the ability to think outside the box open up.

“Look after yourself first, and everything else will follow. I used to put everyone else’s needs before my own, like so many women do, especially after becoming a wife and mother. I’ve learned that when you nurture yourself, you have so much more to give to others and to your work.”
