Bring a little spice to your life with Big Ev’s highly acclaimed chilli jams, chilli chutneys and chilli Italian sauces made locally with natural ingredients. All their products are designed to be used straight from the jar, the way you use them is only limited by your imagination.
What is your company background, how did you start the business?
Big Ev’s is a family owned small business operating locally in Seaview, Lower Hutt. We started in September 2019 in response to the support over the years of family and friends who found Big Ev’s sauces and jams too addictive and demanded more, so we grew and went commercial.
Big Ev’s makes and sells Chilli based Jam’s, Chutney’s and Italian Sauces to the discerning palate. Dairy free, soy free, vegan friendly and no gluten products used. They are unique and designed to be used on their own or as a compliment to other foods.
They are not designed to be super hot and over power the food, but to complement and enhance the culinary experience. Depending on your palate you would say they are either mild or medium. Our regular clients have commented that they are addictive and once sampled, a must have.
What is the current product range and variants and how do these products stand out in the market?
We have a range of Soy and dairy free products that are vegan friendly and use no Gluten products:
- 3 Chilli Jams: Tomato, Beetroot and Banana Beetroot.
- 2 Chilli Chitneys: Tomato, Beetroot.
- 2 Chilli Pasta Sauces: A traditional Milder chilli Neapolitan and an Amatriciana which has a little more heat. Both of these are unique to the market.
Our Chilli Jam is a sweet and savoury blended texture once again with our own spice combination. We believe there is nothing like it on the market. The tomato Chilli jam is a sweet and savoury compliment to cheese boards, spreads, cold meats, pizzas, sauces and fish and chicken marinades. The beetroot Chilli jam we use as for the Tomato but as a pork or beef marinade. The Banana Beetroot Chilli jam is used the same but can encompass all meats as a marinade. Once tasted you will understand why this is our top selling chilli jam. We personally use this instead of cranberry and it makes a great spread on a cheese melt.
Our Chilli Chutney is a chunky texture but with our own unique spices combination. The Tomato Chilli Chutney and the Beetroot Chilli Chutney are a savoury compliment to cheese boards, spreads, cold meats and casseroles.
Our Neapolitan is a traditional blended Pasta sauce with a mild hint of chilli. Great in spag boll, lasagne and any pasta dish or mixed with the Amatriciana to give greater spread. The Amatriciana is a traditional Italian chunky Pasta sauce with a medium hint of chilli. Great with ravioli, gnocchi and pasta needing something to stick to it. It’s good in lasagne and any pasta or noodle dish. We also use it as a dipping sauce for meats or dumplings and add it to cold meat dishes and rolls. Once you’ve tasted it you’ll know why it’s our biggest pasta sauce seller.
What are the plans for the business moving forward, is there any expansion on the horizon?
We would like to arrange commercial manufacture and to be on the supermarket shelves. We are currently looking for business partners that can assist in this process.

They are at Scheckters Deli in Petone. Cest Cheese in Featherston. Martinborough Wine Merchants in Martin Borough Gordonton Farm Produce store in Gordonton, Waikato Slow water Trading Co in Puhoi. We would like to have more retailers on board.
