USA | ALDI has reached two significant sustainability milestones in a groundbreaking move, solidifying its commitment to becoming the nation's most sustainable grocer. First, ALDI has successfully removed all plastic shopping bags from its 2,300+ stores, making it the first major USA retailer to achieve this feat. This initiative is expected to prevent nearly 4,400 tons (almost nine million pounds) of plastic from entering circulation annually.
In addition to eliminating plastic bags, ALDI has set a new industry-leading goal to transition to natural refrigerants across all USA stores by the end of 2035. This forward-looking goal aligns with ALDI's growth strategy and commitment to keeping products fresh while supporting a healthier planet. The transition builds on ALDI's existing use of environmentally friendly refrigerants in over 600 stores, resulting in nearly 60 percent savings in potential carbon emissions each year.
Jason Hart, CEO of ALDI, emphasised the importance of sustainability in the company's growth.
"As one of America's fastest-growing retailers, we take our responsibility to lead the industry in sustainability seriously so our customers don't have to choose between shopping responsibly and saving money," said Hart.
ALDI plans to implement a region-specific purchasing strategy, considering the unique climate of each area. This approach will involve utilising carbon dioxide and propane refrigerants, boasting ultra-low Global Warming Potential (GWP). Starting this year, ALDI will adopt environmentally friendly refrigerants for all new and renovated stores, gradually replacing existing refrigerants in current stores with low-GWP alternatives.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognised ALDI's commitment to environmentally friendly refrigeration practices. In 2023, ALDI received the EPA's GreenChill Store Certification Excellence recognition, achieving the most certifications at the platinum level among USA grocery retailers. Additionally, 109 ALDI stores in 17 states received GreenChill Store Re-Certification Excellence, acknowledging five consecutive years of platinum-level certifications.
Cindy Newberg, Director of the EPA's Stratospheric Protection Division, commended ALDI's efforts.
"ALDI is leading the way with over 600 GreenChill certified stores and a GreenChill record," said Newberg.
These sustainability initiatives underscore ALDI's ongoing commitment to protecting the planet and investing in causes that resonate with its shoppers and communities. For more details, explore ALDI's Annual Sustainability Progress Report.
