German supermarket giant, ALDI, has partnered with Israel-based computer company, Trigo, to launch an AI-powered cashier-less grocery store, ALDI Shop & Go, based in the centre of the Dutch city of Utrecht.
The AI-powered independent supermarket will allow shoppers to walk in, select their items, and walk out without queueing at the checkout lane or scanning any items.
Trigo will apply its computer-generated algorithms to shelf sensors and ceiling-mounted cameras, analysing anonymised shoppers' movements and product choices. Payments and receipts are settled digitally.
The 370㎡ (4305 square feet) AI-powered autonomous supermarket has marked a milestone in the digitisation of the ALDI Nord Group of Companies. It is the first such a store in the Netherlands to open to the public. It is also Trigo's largest store format to date, with the company working to increase the size of its store formats.
"With ALDI Shop & Go, we have developed a concept that combines the discount idea and computer vision technology - always intending to make shopping as easy as possible," shared Sinanudin Omerhodzic, CTO at ALDI Einkauf.
