The Compost Manufacturing Alliance, the global leader in providing industrial composting facilities with an accepted compostable standard by performing field disintegration testing, awarded the U.S.A. brand Smile Compostable Solutions a commercial compostability status.
Smile Compostable Solutions have innovated a plant-based coffee compatible with significant brands of coffee machines, including Nespresso. The company now wears the token of two of North America's primary certifiers of compostable packaging, CMA and the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI).
Using a network of composting facilities throughout the US to conduct live testing, the CMA verified Smile’s coffee pod passed in-vessel and windrow testing, the landmark event making the coffee pods the first to receive compostable certification from both CMA and BPI. The new seal of approval promises and ensures that the product will break down in the commercial composter, which has baseline operating conditions.
"We are so excited to offer a CMA-I and CMA-W certified commercially compostable pod that, unlike other pods, actually works in a real commercial composting environment," stated Smile's CEO, Michael Sands.
"This is a perfect complement to our home compostable pod that is also compatible with Nespresso Original brewers. These pods expand our compostable leadership by being available today while our competitors are still developing."
Certification provides real-world, evidence-based information that Smile's product is compostable.
