Tiffany Haddish's Diaspora Groceries store aims to open in South Los Angeles in 2024. The actress and comedian first announced and incorporated the store in 2021, as she wanted to be a grocer and help her community.
“Empower our community by utilising food as medicine providing access to local, sustainable healthy food, BIPOC products and resources,” is the store’s mission, according to its website.
Haddish hopes to bring a store to her local community that provides people with healthy food choices and financial literacy tools due to her personal experiences with food insecurity. The actress recalled a time when she was homeless and ate from pomegranate, passion fruit and orange trees in the streets.
The new store hopes to stock 80 percent BIPOC and is seeking suppliers' applications. It also asks consumers to complete a survey about products they want to see in the store.
