World’s Largest Supermarket Chains

Yahoo! Finance has released its list of the world’s largest supermarket chains based on 2020 total revenue and the number of store locations. Calculations weighted revenue by 70 percent and locations by 30 percent.

The top five are:

 

Kroger

1 - The Kroger Co. The USA operator has 1,617 global locations and employs half a million people. Its 2020 revenue was USD$122 billion.

Albertsons

2 - Alberstons Companies, Inc. Founded in 1939 in Idaho, USA, the chain had a 2020 revenue of USD$62.46 billion. It has over 300,000 employees.

3 - Ahold Delhaize. The Dutch multinational supermarket chain sits in over 11 countries, with 1,970 global locations and 375,000 employees. Its 2020 revenue was €74.7 billion.

Loblaws

4 - Loblaw Companies. Loblaw is a major Canadian supermarket chain with 2,439 locations and a 2020 revenue of CAD$51.86 billion.

Publix

5 - Publix Super Markets Inc. As one of the few employee-owned supermarket chains in the world, 65.8 percent of the 1,269 locations are in Florida, USA. Its 2020 revenue was USD$45.2 billion.
