Lidl Germany Implementing Higher Animal Welfare Standards

Lidl Germany

Through intensive cooperation with all of its partners in its supply chain, Lidl has become Germany's first supermarket to convert its range of fresh beef to significantly higher animal welfare standards.

Between October 2023 and spring 2024, the entire range of fresh beef from the fresh meat counter will be converted to at least level 3 of the four-level labelling of husbandry. In addition, Lidl in Germany has already reached its goal of offering at least 25 percent of the entire range of fresh meat from husbandry levels 3 and 4 by the end of 2024. As a partner of German agriculture, the food retailer will continue to source the meat from Germany.

"This significant step in further developing our range shows that animal welfare is important for us and our customers,” said Christoph Graf, goods manager at Lidl Dienstleisungs.

He continued that achieving these steps for the betterment of animal welfare is only possible with the trust and constructive cooperation with Lidl’s partners in agriculture and the supply chain.

“The transformation to more animal welfare can only succeed if the producers are willing to convert their operations accordingly.”

From the beginning of 2024, Lidl in Germany will also convert its fresh and lactose-free milk brands to husbandry forms 3 and 4. The supermarket has therefore reached its current target a year earlier than planned. In 2024, the long-life milk and the entire range of drinking milk will be converted to the higher husbandry level 3, with Lidl drinking milk continuing to be 100 percent supplied from Germany.

Lidl in Germany has been committed to more animal welfare for years. As a reliable partner of local agriculture, the food retailer is continuously developing the husbandry conditions. With the invention of the husbandry compass in 2018 and the transfer of this to the husbandry type labelling, Lidl in Germany set specific goals for the better.
