Kiwi company Kaweka Foods has voluntarily recalled four of its products from market, following notification that some of their packaged meals may contain chicken bone fragments which could present a choking risk.

The recalled products, Kaweka Butter Chicken 350g; Kaweka Thai Chicken 350g; Kaweka Apricot Chicken 250g and Weight Watchers Thai Chicken 350g, have ‘best before’ dates of 26.09.16 to 14.02.17 inclusive.  It does not affect any other Kaweka or Weight Watchers food.

The products can be purchased from all major supermarkets and other food retailers throughout New Zealand. Retailers have taken the identified meals off shelves and consumers are advised to return product to their retailer for a full refund or phone Kaweka Foods on 0800 529 352 with any queries.

A Kaweka Foods spokesperson commented, “We’d like to apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused by this recall, however their welfare is our prime concern. The production of our ready-to-eat meals is in strict accordance with the Australia New Zealand Food Standards food safety plan, and we’re taking all the necessary steps to ensure this does not happen again.”

The Hastings-based company, which sources its chicken from New Zealand farms, says it hopes to have new chicken meals on shelf as soon as possible following a thorough review of processes.
