Reduction In Drunk Driving Offences

Reduction In Drunk Driving Offences

The annual NZ Alcohol Beverages Council survey has showcased that New Zealanders rank six critical interventions as the most effective in reducing poor drinking choices.

These include targeted support programmes for harmful drinkers, confiscating cars from repeat drink drivers, alcohol education in schools and workplaces, heavier fines for drunk and disorderly behaviour and the use of alcohol interlocks in cars to reduce drink-driving.

Education, a powerful tool in reducing alcohol-related harm, has been endorsed by the majority of respondents. 78 percent agreed that alcohol education in schools would be effective, while 54 percent supported workplace alcohol education programmes.

“Education in schools is helping to provide young people with practical information, including how to say no to alcohol and that it's okay not to drink”, said NZABC executive director Virginia Nicholls.

Since 2019, the Tomorrow Project, a transformative initiative governed by Spirits NZ, NZ Winegrowers, and the Brewers Association, has been instrumental in funding the Life Education Trust. This trust provides practical information and advice to support better decision-making, contributing significantly to the reduction of harmful drinking.

Over the past ten years, convictions for drunk driving offences have declined by 26 percent. The NZ Health survey also stated that 84 percent of New Zealand adults responsibly drink beer, wine, and spirits.
