The Franz Josef community is set to receive a significant funding boost from the Foodstuffs South Island Community Trust through its locally-owned Four Square store. The owners, Josh and Kirsty Flavell, supported a grant application to the Trust, securing $6,740 of funding for the Franz Josef Community Centre. This centre plays a vital role in the village, serving as a gathering place for locals engaged in sports, hobbies, and community connections.
The funding will be directed toward replacing and providing equipment for local sports groups and playgroups operating outside the community centre, including badminton, netball, volleyball, soccer, and the local scout group. The community, heavily reliant on tourism, faced economic challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, with a significant population decrease exacerbating the impact.
Josh and Kirsty, who took over the Four Square in 2023, have become integral local community members. Kirsty coaches the South Westland Mini Ferns netball team, and their children actively participate in local sports. The funding supports various community sports and activities, contributing to residents' well-being.
Josh shared the couple's excitement at making a meaningful impact on the community, especially given the challenges faced during the pandemic. The Franz Josef Community Centre, considered the hub of the village, serves people of all ages, and the funding is expected to enhance facilities and experiences for residents and visitors.
The Franz Josef Community Development Officer, Sabine Grift-Verschuur, welcomed the funding boost, sharing her excitement about how the upgrades and improved facilities benefit the community.
"We're so excited to be able to give the Franz Josef Community Centre the upgrades and equipment it needed, and we look forward to providing great experiences and facilities for all members of the community and visitors to enjoy," said Grift-Verschuur.
