More Recycling Of Cans & Bottles

Kerbside Standardisation should see more recycling of beverage cans and bottles.

The New Zealand Beverage Council welcomed the new kerbside standardisation rules coming into effect tomorrow (1 February). These rules will ensure that the same types of plastic, glass and aluminium can be recycled anywhere in New Zealand, doing away with ad-hoc rules in different council areas.

“This is a good step towards the larger Container Return Scheme, which is largely ready to go and just needs a green light from the new government,” said Belinda Milnes, the New Zealand Beverage Council’s Director of Public Affairs.

The Beverage Council and its members are committed to supporting the recycling and reuse of beverage containers and packaging.

“Our members say sustainability is one of the most important goals for their businesses, and some companies have recently completely re-designed their packaging to make sure it is recyclable.”

“We’d encourage consumers to remember plastics 1,2 and 5 plus aluminium cans and glass bottles can all be returned for recycling.”

The non-alcoholic beverage industry in New Zealand is a $2 billion industry and covers manufacturers, brands and suppliers across bottled water, sodas, energy drinks, milk drinks and juices.
