Mind The Gap to Present Equal Pay Petition to Government

The Equal Pay Act was passed on October 20th, 1972, and almost exactly 50 years on, Mind the Gap is demanding the government addresses current pay transparency issues. On October 11 at noon, the campaigners will hand over their petition for the government to introduce new pay gap reporting legislation.

“The government has said it is looking at addressing pay gaps but hasn’t committed to a timeframe. If there was ever a time to honour the good work done by those pioneers of the Equal Pay Legislation, it is now,” said Jo Cribb to the NZ Herald.

Mind The Gap’s petition currently has just under 8,000 signatures. A group of 13 businesses have also all signed an open letting calling for action: Westpac, SkyCity Auckland, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners, Z Energy, DB Breweries, Lion, Auckland Transport, Frucor Suntory, Xero, Kiwibank, Meridian Energy and Chorus.

Mind The Gap’s recent polling suggested that 75 percent of kiwis want to see medium and large employers required to measure and publish their pay gaps.
