MOVIE MAGIC AT COUNTDOWN

Disney Words has launched at Countdown supermarkets nationwide, a word play partnership with Disney Pixar designed to make literacy and spelling fun.

In a long-awaited return to collectables, Countdown customers can collect Disney Word tiles from today (Thursday 12 September) until 28 October, with the ever-popular swap days already booked in for 12 October 2019 and 26 October 2019.

Kiri Hannifin, Countdown’s Corporate Affairs, Safety and Sustainability, said ideas for entertaining without screens was a common request from Kiwi parents and caregivers they talked to, and Disney Words fit the bill to bring spelling to life in a fun and engaging way.

“Word games have long been popular and we hope this will inspire Kiwi families to play together and have fun, but also learn a little at the same time.  The tiles are designed to make it a fun and interactive way to teach children literacy skills, such as learning the alphabet, spelling and letter recognition," said Hannifin.

“Whether you’ve grown up with Disney and Pixar, or your children are enchanted with the latest characters, there's a little something for everyone in this programme."

Customers will be able to collect a tile with every $30 they spend in store or online, while stocks last.  Each tile is wrapped in paper and made out of recyclable tin-plated steel. The tiles feature a letter on one side and a Disney character on the other.  The collection includes the alphabet, punctuation marks and other symbols.

There are 36 characters to collect across 11 movies including Frozen, Toy Story, Disney Princess, Moana, Cars, Aladdin, Mickey Mouse & Friends, Beauty and The Beast, The Incredibles, The Lion King and Dumbo.

Disney Words runs from Thursday 12 September to Monday 28 October and will include bonus tiles and swap days to enable families to trade any double-ups and complete their sets.

Countdown has also gifted Disney Word tiles to hundreds of primary schools across the country with specially-designed lesson guides in line with the set curriculum.

At the end of the promotion, all in-store Moana characters will be donated to children’s hospitals and wards as part of Countdown’s Kids Hospital Appeal.
