US-based Meijer has rolled out trials for grocery waste-reducing app Flashfood. The app allows customers to browse discounted food items, including meat, produce, seafood, deli and bakery products that are nearing its sell-by date.
“Food is at the core of what we do, and we are constantly looking at ways to minimise in-store waste because it’s the right thing to do for our communities and our customers,” said Don Sanderson, group vice president of Fresh for Grand Rapids at Meijer.
By purchasing closed-date food items on Flashfood customers can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions often caused by decomposing food waste.
The app is available for download in iOs and Android devices and has been utilised by major US and Canadian supermarket chains.
