BurgerFuel and Citizen have partnered to produce limited edition craft beer from supermarket bread that was going to waste. Starch is extracted from the bread and used instead of malt in the beer. Leftover bread mash is then turned into spent grain flour and used to make wholemeal buns; a circular process BurgerFuel hopes to continue if the limited release goes well.
LagerFuel and LagerFuel Light are brewed by Citizen at Sawmill Brewery in Matakana, a B Corp brewery with the highest sustainability standards. The beers will be available exclusively on Citizen’s website and at BurgerFuel Napier while stocks last.
“We're hoping that people will love the beer, resonate with the purpose, and help us sell through our first batch, meaning there's a real potential for selling into liquor retail and supermarkets. Then we could see not only a great-tasting, positive impact craft beer on shelf, but spent grain flour BurgerFuel buns on the 2023 menu, completing the circularity objective of the initiative,” said Nikki Soons, BurgerFuel head of brand and marketing.
Kiwis waste more than 29 million loaves of bread each year, and the partnership sees one slice of bread rescued per can.
