UK | Morrisons has become the first UK supermarket to save three million ‘Surprise Bags’ of food from going to waste.
Morrisons partnered with Too Good To Go back in November 2019. Its customers have rescued over three million Surprise Bags from nearly 500 Morrisons supermarkets, 949 Morrisons Daily convenience stores and 344 Morrisons cafés across the UK.
“We are incredibly proud to be the first UK retailer to have reached the milestone of saving three million ‘Surprise Bags’ from going to waste through our partnership with Too Good To Go,” said Rebecca Cranshaw, Corporate Responsibility Manager for Morrisons.
“This achievement reflects our continued commitment to reducing food waste whilst helping our customers access great food at great value.”
Each bag contains surplus food worth at least GBP 10 at retail value, including items such as fruit, veg, dairy and baked goods. All items are available at a significantly reduced price, allowing customers to create delicious meals from items that would have previously been wasted.
In the café, the contents of each bag have a value of up to GBP 11 and are packed with hot and cold items, including items from the popular Morrisons café breakfast, such as bacon, beans, hash browns and sauces.
The milestone directly supports Morrisons' goal to halve food waste across its operations by 2030, as part of its long-term sustainability plan. In addition to reducing food waste, the initiative has helped avoid approximately 8,100 tonnes of CO2e emissions, which is equivalent to the emissions from 1,408 round-the-world flights or filling over 15 million baths.
Too Good To Go is a certified B Corp social impact organisation working with companies such as Morrisons to prevent surplus food from going to waste.
Its app allows customers to purchase Surprise Bags from local retailers at a fraction of their original value, promoting affordable access to quality food while reducing the environmental impact.
“We are delighted to have reached the milestone of three million Surprise Bags saved in partnership with Morrisons. Every Surprise Bag saved means good food is enjoyed instead of wasted - and that’s a win for both people and the planet,” said Sophie Trueman, Country Director UK & I, Too Good To Go.
“Tackling food waste is only possible through strong, long-term partnerships like this one, and together we’re making real progress towards a more sustainable food system.”
