Bugging Out

Supermarket chain Sainsbury’s has become the first supermarket to sell edible bugs as crickets hit the shelves. Customer’s at 250 of the popular UK grocery stores will be able to fill their shopping baskets with Eat Grub’s Smoky BBQ Crunchy Roasted Crickets. The crickets, which are farmed in Europe, will be available for purchase in packs of 50 for just NZD 2.80.

The crickets are said to have a crunchy texture with a rich and smoky flavour. “Insect snacks should no longer be seen as a gimmick or something for a dare, and it’s clear that consumers are increasingly keen to explore this new sustainable protein source,” said Rachel Eyre, head of future brands at Sainsbury’s.

Edible bugs are already increasing in popularity with the global market set to exceed $522m by 2023.
