Denmark Gets New Discount Supermarket

Salling Group opened the first of its new discount supermarkets, BASALT. The supermarket went from an idea to reality in just a few weeks, a record sprint to help Danes with inflation. The first BASALT opened in Amager, and there is a total of ten planned.

“It has been an intense but extremely exciting few weeks, where we have worked hard to create a new concept, put together a relevant range and finally get the store ready for opening. Now we are in place and looking forward to showing our new store to customers,” said Per Bank, Salling Group CEO.

The stores will offer a large selection of basic everyday goods that do not require refrigeration to halve operating costs. Goods will be mainly stored on pallets or left in bulk packaging on the shelf to reduce handling costs. There will be no specials in store, just consistently low prices. Products will include pasta, oatmeal, toilet paper, diapers, toothpaste, long-lasting milk, flour and bread as well as a basic selection of fruit and vegetables.

“We have gone to great lengths to create a concept that can help Danes to make their everyday lives fit together better, at a time when the private economy is under pressure, and with the market's lowest prices for the most basic daily goods, we at least have given our bid for a concrete weapon against inflation.”
