AUS | Coles has announced the launch of the Dairy Farm Sustainability Accelerator Fund, offering $1.45 million in grants to 100 Coles dairy farms across Australia. The grants, up to $50,000 each, aim to drive innovation and support projects focusing on animal welfare, solar energy, and infrastructure enhancements.

Brad Gorman, Coles' General Manager of Dairy, Freezer, and Convenience, said Coles was committed to empowering its direct-sourcing dairy farmers to invest in sustainable practices and innovation. Coles directly partners with farms in various regions to supply over 490 million litres of milk annually for Coles Brand products.

The funded projects, led by farmers, encompass initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance soil health and water management, promote biodiversity, and improve animal welfare. Coles looks forward to these endeavours' positive impact on farm operations and the environment.

Among the grant recipients are Benjamin and Melissa Holloway, Victorian dairy farmers who plan to utilise the funds to install an 80kw solar roof system, significantly boosting their farm's renewable energy capacity. Similarly, the Parkinson family intends to construct a 100ML mega dam to enhance water management across their properties.

Other projects supported by the grants include the development of shade shelters and tree shelter belts in Western Australia, the construction of methane catchment ponds in Victoria, installing touch screens for herd management in southwest Victoria, and the upgrading of irrigation systems in Western Australia and New South Wales.

Coles' Sustainable Dairy Development Group (CSDDG) is pivotal in fostering sustainability among its direct-sourcing dairy farmers. With an investment of over $3.78 million in on-farm initiatives, including education, training, and health improvement programs, the CSDDG is dedicated to supporting farmers in their journey towards sustainability and resilience.
