Morrisons Launch White Eggs For Farmers

Morrisons launch white eggs that 'give back' to farmers

UK | White eggs have the same nutritional properties as brown eggs and can be used similarly in cooking.

The only difference between them is the colour of the shell, which is determined by the hen's breed. White hens require less feed to produce the same amount of eggs as brown hens, resulting in a lower carbon footprint.

Hens supplying eggs to Morrisons Chuckle Egg range can roam outside whenever they want. The range also has woodlands and bee-friendly flower strips.

Morrisons launched its 'For Farmers' range in 2015 so customers could show support for farmers by choosing a range that commits extra money to go to farmers. The range has been highly successful and has given over £25 million back to farmers since its launch.

In addition to the white egg farmers, Morrisons worked with over 65 egg farmers who supplied its brand-free range and organic eggs, all of which were approved by the British Lion Code and RSPCA or equivalent standards.

The farmers benefit from long-term contracts and short payment terms, which give them the financial reassurance they need to invest in their farm’s infrastructure and the future of their business. This has positively impacted the long-term sustainability of the egg industry.

Morrisons also offers carbon footprinting analysis for every flock and supports farmers in developing a sustainable growth plan tailored to their farm.

“Brown eggs have traditionally been sold in the UK; white eggs currently account for only ten percent of sales. We know our customers are continuously looking for ways to shop more sustainably,” said Sophie Throup, Technical and Sustainability Director at Myton Food Group for Morrisons.

“Although white and brown eggs are the same in taste and size, the lower carbon footprint benefits of using white hens means we can offer a more environmentally friendly egg. We have worked closely with our existing egg farmers to launch this full white pack and are committed to offering our customers sustainable options across our stores.”

Morrisons also has ‘Better For Our Planet Eggs,’ which the Business Improvement and Standards Company (BSI) certified as carbon neutral earlier this year, and ‘Morrisons Farmers Favorites,’ a range of loose white or brown eggs that customers can pick themselves.

Morrisons has been Britain’s most prominent farming customer and has launched many initiatives to show its continued support for the industry and its workers. These include being the first UK retailer to create the ‘For Famers’ range and partnering with The Institute For Agriculture and Horticulture to help farmers reach sustainability targets.
