FIVE MILLION LITRES LOST

The recent Kaikoura earthquake has cost the Marlborough’s wine industry five million litres of wine, amounting to two percent of the region’s total production. Moreover, 60 million litres of tank capacity were damaged, 20 percent of Marlborough’s total capacity. Up to 1,000 tanks were damaged to some extent, whereas 150 tanks were damaged irreparably. This means that repair and replacement work will still be required for the upcoming 2017 vintage.

Moving forward, the industry will need to focus on remedial action and long-term security.
