INTRODUCING THE KEELCLIP

Across Europe, Coca-Cola has introduced the KeelClip to replace the plastic wrap on its aluminium can multipacks. KeelClip is a minimal paperboard design that consists of a top board for the cans to clip on. The keel refers to a ship’s keel, which stabilises the pack.

Coco-Cola has worked with Graphic Packaging International to optimise the technology. “This new type of packaging not only replaces the plastic wrap but also minimises the amount of paper and card required.”

By the end of 2021, Coco-Cola HBC will remove shrink wrap from all multipacks of cans in the EU markets. Approximately $16.6 million will be invested in this technology. The brand is hoping to save 2,000 tonnes of plastic and 3,000 tonnes of CO2 a year.
