LABOUR WANTS AUCKLAND TO GO PLASTIC-BAG-FREE

Auckland’s mayoral candidate and Labour MP Phil Goff is advocating a 10-cent levy on plastic bags, pointing out that a similar law introduced in the UK has resulted in an 85 percent reduction in plastic bag use. “This is replicated in cities around the world which have taken this action. We need to do the same,” Goff said.
A local example comes from Countdown Waiheke, which has recently gone plastic-bag-free. Goff would like to extend this policy to Auckland supermarkets and, to achieve that, he plans to work with MPs to promote a change through a Local Bill in Parliament.
