Family-run business Danny’s Pita Bread has recently recalled three of its products—Danny's Garlic Filled Pita Bread, Danny's Olive Filled Pita Bread and Danny's Garlic Filled Wholemeal Pita Bread—due to soy contamination. The products, sold in supermarkets throughout NZ and coming in a 320g plastic tray with a best-before date of 2 August or earlier, contained an undeclared soy allergen. The Ministry for Primary Industry (MPI) issued a warning, advising people with a soy allergy or intolerance not to consume any of the three types of bread, and instead return them to their retailer for a full refund.
Soy allergy symptoms include tingling in the mouth, itching, abdominal pain and skin redness. In rare cases, it can cause anaphylaxis, a potentially fatal reaction.
