Healthier Alternatives

Tasty and nutritional snacks have grown in demand, pushing major ingredient suppliers to develop healthier alternatives.

Functional solutions that support human and planetary health have skyrocketed in popularity due to changing opinions.

Innova Market Insights data has indicated a two percent growth in snack launches globally, with the finger foods/hors d’oeuvres category rising eight percent.

Consumer demands, shaped by unique regional preferences, have not just influenced but defined the trends that brands must adapt to in order to survive.

Consumers are now seeking delicious and indulgent snacks that are also healthy. New regulations and the popularisation of front-of-pack labelling schemes make these choices easier.

Paula LaBine, marketing director for Global Milling & Baking Solutions at ADM, stated that functional snacking is a balancing act because consumers seek variety, convenience, delicious sensory experiences, and wellness benefits.

Natural ingredients derived from fruit, vegetables, and nuts are popular among global consumers. However, consumers are not only concerned with the ingredients but also whether they have a sustainable impact.

Although all fruits and vegetables are inherently natural, not all ingredients are created equally in terms of sustainable and transparent farming practices and sourcing.

Snack nuts, mixes and snack bars have risen in popularity, supplying a good source of unsaturated fats, fibre and micronutrients like calcium, iron and potassium.

Consumers value snacks that are lower in sugar and supply benefits such as energy boosts, immune function, digestive health, heart health, and emotional well-being.

The future of healthy snacks will continue trending towards functionality as consumers increasingly prioritise snacks that offer satisfaction but support their well-being.

Snack companies anticipate a continued expansion into the plant-based movement, which is driven by various factors such as ethical considerations, personal health concerns, and environmental awareness.
