New Liquid Detergent Packaging To Reduce Carbon Emissions

Sainsbury's

The United Kingdom’s retail chain, Sainsbury’s, has announced its new liquid detergent packaging in all its store and online. The new packaging is estimated to reduce carbon emissions by 50 percent, avoiding the accumulation of 22 tonnes of plastic annually.

The new packaging is Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified, estimated to reduce plastic use by 80 percent. It is specifically designed to support customers in reducing plastic use at home, with each laundry detergent packaging being recyclable either at home or through recycling banks.

The innovation is across all own-brand 750ml laundry detergents and will replace sleeved plastic bottle packaging with cardboard cartons. Sainsbury’s tropical super concentrated, bio super concentrated, non-bio super complete, colour super concentrated and lavender super focused lines are included. Each liquid has been reformulated with high concentration, meaning less liquid detergent is needed across each wash.

The new carton is 35 percent lighter than the original packaging and will take 13 lorries off the road annually. The innovation will help the retailer progress against its target of net zero in its operations by 2035.

However, this innovation is only part of Sainsbury’s effort for plastic reductions across its household range. The retailer aims to halve its use of own-brand plastic packaging by 2025.
